A Message From Mrs. Williams

Welcome to a new school year at E.D. Nixon Elementary School where the best and the brightest students are focused and determined to reach the top.

Our school honors the lifetime work of Edgar D. Nixon, a voting rights activist, civil rights activist, and an education rights activist who was born, raised, and lived in Montgomery, Alabama. Realizing the value and impact education had on life, E.D. Nixon taught himself how to read. Although he knew getting a formal education was not going to be easy, E.D. Nixon knew it was the solution to the problems many African-Americans faced during the early 1900s. Mr. Nixon was determined to live a life of honor and respect and would not accept anything that came quick or easy. He knew anything worth having was worth working for. As a young boy, E.D. Nixon worked several odd jobs to pay for school. Unfortunately, there were times when he was not able to attend school; however, that did not stop him from continuing to educate himself. His dedication to empowering African-Americans led to him organizing and serving as president of the Montgomery Chapter of the NAACP.

The faculty and staff of E.D. Nixon Elementary School want to instill in our students the same love for learning Mr. Nixon worked tirelessly to promote. We have high expectations for every student and ourselves and provide a quality education. Our teachers work collaboratively and many serve as building leaders. Together we support one another in the development of a school culture that promotes excellence. When our students transition to secondary schools, they will be positively noted as students from E.D. Nixon Elementary School.

To develop a culture of learning, responsibility, resourcefulness, and respect, it is important that all stakeholders (teachers, parents, students, and community members) work together for the greater good, which is educating our students to be life-long learners and successful in college, career, and beyond. Together we can continue the work Mr. Nixon began and move our students to achieve their dreams and goals.

Mr. Nixon had high expectations, provided no excuses, and continuously produced results. We embody his spirit and are working together to get back to excellence by bringing our best every day.
